Flags Fly for First Day

The flags were flying as I entered Mareel on my first day as Project Development Manager for the Shetland Moving Image Archive.  I'll be keeping you updated on the progress of the project over the next year or so, but in the meantime here's a little bit of info on what we're all about.....

The Shetland Moving Image Archive Group is a registered charity, SCO 42107, working to establish a local film archive that can clean, preserve and make digital copies of old film including cine.  Those digital copies would be stored online on a server, and copies can then be made onto DVD or video, or the films can be viewed online and shared via email.

Old film that is held in this way can be used for a number of purposes, and the Film Archive will promote the use of old film in various spheres including the core areas for:

  • Education
  • Heritage
  • Creativity
  • Tourism

Phase 1

Phase 1 of the project involves identifying the equipment and premises requirements and cost, developing the business plan, raising awareness of the project and securing funding required for Phase 2.

Phase 2

Phase 2 is to procure the premises, equipment, staff and training required so that we can start collecting old film to preserve it and make it available for future generations, and share images of our heritage, culture and pastimes.
